Sure, many of us just sit on it all day, but you know what, this softens it and it loses its functionality. Your glutes – or butt muscles – have a purpose, and you need to use them!
The more you sit on your butt, the less active it is, the flatter it becomes and the less support you get from your glutes to support your knees and ankles. A nice round butt is not just for aesthetic reasons or because we are obsessed with our appearance.
A nice round butt supports good body posture and the correct functionality of surrounding muscles. For instance, if you have a problem with your knees or ankles you should check whether your butt muscles are functioning as they should.
Nice round butts are not machine made. Squats for example are one of the main round butt exercises there are. Try sitting in the air with your knees at 90 degrees for you glutes to really kick in. The glute bridge shown below really uses and strengthens your glutes. The most important thing though is to activate the muscles and get them to function properly. Here’s a great butt exercise that you can do, whatever your age or shape!
Lie down on your back with your heels up against your butt. Start flexing the glutes and check if you really are flexing them by poking the middle of your butt cheek. Then slowly lift your hips from the floor for 3 secs, keep them flexed for another 3 secs and then slowly relax them down for 3 secs. Repeat. Make sure you maintain your posture and do not over extend your lower back. Repeat the exercise 8-12 times for 1-3 sets. You can safely do this one 2-3 times a week. If you want to make it harder, do it on one leg with the other leg in the air.
Have a nice round butt – you deserve it! 🙂
